The Following instructions are recommended for optimal study results: However, if you have special needs or are unable to follow these instructions please contact our offices.

Please arrive 30 minutes early for your scheduled appointment. You must bring the following items in order for your exam to be performed:

• Medicare and/or insurance cards
• Picture ID or Driver’s License
• Rreferral sheet and authorization if required
• Prior X-rays, if requested.

Continue to take your medications while following the appropriate instructions below. Please call us with any questions or concerns about your imaging study:

MRI: Allow 1 hour for the examination. Please bring any previous x-rays that are related to this exam. If you have a
pacemaker, electro-mechanical device, aneurysm clip, or metal devices or fragments in your body, please let us know
immediately as you may be unable to have the examination. Also, please let us know if there is a possibility of pregnancy. Please avoid wearing makeup or jewelry as these may interfere with the exam.

CT SCAN: Allow 1 hour for the examination. Please bring any previous x-rays that are related to this exam.

CT Sinus, Spine, or Extremity: No preparation necessary.

CT Thorax, Chest and Neck: The day before your exam, please be sure to drink plenty of liquids. No solid food or drink four hours prior to your appointment time, but if you are diabetic, you may drink clear juice. Medications may be taken
with little water.

CT Abdomen: The day before your exam, please be sure to drink plenty of liquids. No solid food or drink four hours prior to your appointment, but if you are diabetic, you may drink clear juice. Medications may be taken with little water. You will be given a drink to allow us to see your intestines. This liquid is to be picked up at our facility at least one day before your appointment. Drink one bottle two hours prior to your appointment and one bottle one hour prior to your appointment.

CT Abdomen/Pelvis (combined study): The day before your exam, please be sure to drink plenty of liquids. No solid food or drink four hours prior to your appointment, but if you are diabetic, you may drink clear juice. Medications may be taken with little water. You will be given a drink to allow us to see your intestines. This liquid is to be picked up at our facility at least one day before your appointment. Drink one bottle four hours prior to your appointment, one bottle two hours prior to your appointment, and one bottle one hour prior to your appointment.**For scans ordered without IV contrast, please hold urine for half an hour prior to exam.

CT Head: If your CT appointment is for a contrast exam, do not eat solid food for four hours prior to your appointment. You can drink clear liquids up to two hours prior to your appointment.

ULTRASOUND: If you are scheduled for a pelvic or OB ultrasound, your bladder must be full in order to
perform your exam. To accomplish this, finish drinking 32 oz. of water one hour before the exam. For abdomen and gallbladder exams, NO FOOD OR DRINK 8 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT.

BARIUM ENEMA: Allow 1 hour for the exam. To insure a satisfactory study, your bowel must be entirely free of fecal matter. It is therefore important to follow these instructions carefully:
Pick up a bowel evacuant kit at Boston Diagnostic Imaging for the cost of $10.00, or at the pharmacy two days prior to the exam. Follow the instructions provided.

UGI – UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL SERIES: Allow 20 minutes for the exam. Do not eat, drink, or chew gum after 10 p.m. the night before your exam. Continue prescribed medications but use as little water as possible.

SMALL BOWEL SERIES: Allow 1 to 4 hours for the exam. Do not eat, drink, or chew gum after midnight the night before your exam. Continue prescribed medications but use as little water as possible.
IVP – INTRAVENOUS PYELOGRAM: Allow 1 hour for the exam. Pick up Bowel Evacuant kit at Boston Diagnostic Imaging for the cost of $10.00, or at the pharmacy two days prior to the exam. Follow the instructions provided. Do not eat or drink after midnight the night prior to the exam.

MAMMOGRAM: Allow 30 minutes for the exam. We encourage you to schedule this exam during the first two weeks after your menstrual period. Please indicate whether you have breast implants. You may want to wear a two-piece outfit so you can undress from the waist up. Do not use perfumes, oils, powders, or deodorants on or around the breast area the day of the exam. Caffeine can be avoided 24 hours prior to your exam to decrease the sensitivity of breast tissue. If you have had a previous mammogram, those films will be needed during your appointment for comparison purposes. Please make arrangements to bring them with you.
